TCMC students present "Where Your Food Goes" to Dunmore sixth-graders

2016 Dec 21

Jacob (Jake) Parrick, a second-year medical student from Duryea and Erin Connolly, a first-year medical student from Shickshinny, created and delivered a STEAM presentation on Dec. 15 for sixth-grade students at Dunmore Elementary Center. The medical students, both enrolled at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC), taught the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal system in an interactive, fun presentation entitled, "Where Your Food Goes." The session was made possible through the Scranton Area Foundation's Women in Philanthropy (WIP) initiative. One of WIP's focus areas is STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) education. Careers in STEAM fields are growing and the need for skilled employees is increasing continually, which is why WIP works to enable students in Lackawanna County to learn about various, well-paying careers available in these fields. WIP has partnered with the Dunmore Elementary Center and community partners to bring quality STEAM programs to their fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students on a monthly basis.
