TCMC student, Michael Bedrin of Mountaintop, matches into Walter Reed residency program

2016 Dec 20

Michael Bedrin of Mountaintop, a fourth-year medical student at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) has been notified he has successfully matched into an orthopedic surgery residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. Walter Reed is world-renowned for excellence in orthopedic care, research, and education. Moreover, orthopedic surgery is an extremely competitive residency into which to match. "The entire college, but especially the faculty and clinical preceptors who had the privilege of educating Michael, couldn't be prouder of his significant achievement. Walter Reed is deservedly recognized for its pre-eminent program and distinguished faculty. We wish him great success and know his TCMC training will serve him well in the years ahead," said Steven J. Scheinman, M.D., TCMC president and dean.

Walter Reed says it "serves as the tip of the spear in providing definitive surgical care and rehabilitation for battlefield-injured soldiers and marines." Techniques pioneered at Walter Reed for war-related trauma often end up aiding civilians and contributing to medicine's body of knowledge in regard to surgery and long-term treatment of traumatic injuries. In addition to clinical experience at Walter Reed, the residency program includes rotations at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Fairfax Community Hospital in Fairfax Virginia, and the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. These rotations provide extraordinary opportunities in pediatric orthopedics and community trauma.

Now a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Michael will be promoted to the rank of captain when he receives his doctor of medicine degree in May. He enters the residency program this July.
