Sara Wing of Havertown places into residency program

2017 Mar 24

On March 17, Sara Wing and 87 other students of the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth), the largest class in the school's history, learned their residency placements during the National Resident Matching Program's "Match Day." Match Day occurred simultaneously at medical colleges around the country in an exciting event in which all fourth-year M.D. students opened their envelopes to learn where they will spend the next three to seven years training in specialties. Residencies begin July 1.

Wing's residency will be at SIU SOM & Affil Hosps-IL to train in Otolaryngology in SPRINGFIELD.

"We are proud of the success of our Class of 2017," said Steven J. Scheinman, M.D., president and dean of Geisinger Commonwealth. "Again this year, our students matched into both excellent local residency programs, as well as some of the most competitive programs and specialties in the nation."

Geisinger Commonwealth applicants matched into some of the most competitive specialties in American medicine, including dermatology, radiation oncology, plastic surgery, urology and orthopedic surgery. In addition to the large number of Geisinger Commonwealth students who will train at leading community-based programs, several students will go to residencies at highly competitive teaching hospitals, including those associated with Brown University, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Johns Hopkins and Harvard.

According to the National Resident Matching Program, the 2017 Match included 43,157 total registrants competing for 31,757 positions. Among them were 18,539 fourth-year M.D. students who submitted their program preference lists, including the 88 from Geisinger Commonwealth.
