Preventive Medicine Interest Group at The Commonwealth Medical College assists in planning Nov. 30 lecture

2016 Nov 10

Leanne Woiewodski of Lower Burrell and other student leaders of the Preventive Medicine Interest Group at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) in Scranton are helping to plan a Nov. 30 lecture by renowned biochemist and author, T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D.

The Interest Group was formed to improve the wellbeing of the community by providing the latest, most promising information on wellness and on preventing illnesses - especially heart disease, cancer and diabetes -- through lifestyle changes.

The lecture series the students helped to plan invites thought leaders who provide the community with the tools needed to make healthy decisions for themselves and their families. Lectures focus on subjects such as nutrition, sleep medicine, substance abuse, smoking cessation and other lifestyle changes that improve health and substantially lower health risks. The lectures are also intended for medical students and healthcare professionals to aid them in delivering high-quality patient care. One important goal of the program is to advance regional, disease-centric research collaborations.

Dr. Campbell's best-seller, "The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health," was the result of what many in the scientific community believe to be the most comprehensive study of health and nutrition ever conducted. Dr. Campbell is also the author of the New York Times best-seller "Whole, and The Low-Carb Fraud" and the founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online plant-based nutrition certificate in partnership with eCornell. Dr. Campbell's talk is entitled, "Why Is Nutrition Ignored in Medicine?"

The lecture will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at TCMC's Medical Sciences Building, 525 Pine Street, Scranton. Online registration is available at tcmc.edu/preventivemed or RSVP by calling 570-504-9685.
