Nichole Ogojiaku of Marietta awarded a National Health Service Corps scholarship

2016 Sep 29

Nichole Ogojiaku, M.S., of Marietta, a second-year medical student at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) in Scranton, was recently notified that she was was awarded a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) scholarship for her commitment to primary care. The scholarship pays tuition, fees, other educational costs, and provides a living stipend in return for a commitment to work at least two years at an NHSC-approved site in a medically underserved community. NHSC-approved sites are located in high-need urban and rural communities across the nation. Service begins upon graduation and completion of a primary-care residency training program.

"Since fewer than 200 NHSC scholarships are awarded to medical students around the country, this is a great honor," Nichole said. She is interested in a career in public health, focusing on issues such as access to care and influencing public policy in regard to the social determinants of health. To that end, in addition to studying for her doctor of medicine degree, Nichole is pursuing a dual master's degree in public health from East Stroudsburg University.
