2017 Jul 24

Nicholas Kaiser of Stroudsburg and three other students in the master of biomedical sciences program at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's Doylestown campus teamed with representatives of Hepatitis B United of Philadelphia to participate in the Independence Dragon Boat Regatta race. They joined a field of 92 teams paddling on the classic 500-meter course on the Schuylkill River.

Hepatitis B United Philadelphia is a public awareness and education campaign that is being launched to address the growing severity of hepatitis B and liver cancer in the U.S. Geisinger Commonwealth's Doylestown campus is located at the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute (BSBI). BSBI, formerly the Institute for Hepatitis and Virus Research, is the nation's leading nonprofit research organization dedicated to hepatitis B and liver cancer worldwide. It was established by the Hepatitis B Foundation in 2003 to fulfill its research mission of finding a cure for hepatitis B in our lifetime.

The team consisted of 20 rowers and paddled in three races -- including two second-place finishes.
