Gabriella Logrono of Miramar helps organize event designed to aid future family doctors sensitively and effectively discuss end-of-life issues with patients

2016 Nov 1

Gabriella Logrono of Miramar provided leadership in organizing a special event meant to help future primary care doctors, pharmacists and other providers effectively address the delicate topic of end-of-life care. The Commonwealth Medical College's (TCMC) Chapter of Primary Care Progress (PCP) and Dr. Linda Thomas-Hemak, president and CEO of The Wright Center, hosted an event Oct. 30 to introduce community members, practicing clinicians, physician assistant students, medical students and pharmacy students to the work of a group of healthcare and wellness leaders committed to breaking the taboo regarding these important conversations. Their project, "Let's Have Dinner and Talk About Death," aimed to inspire an ever-growing community of people to talk about an often-not-discussed topic-death and dying. The dinner conversation was not meant to be morbid, but instead to engage on a deeply human level where considerations such as what we want, both in life and during its closure, were discussed. Given that 80 percent of people would like to have end-of life conversations with their doctor when seriously ill, yet only 7 percent report having this talk, PCP at TCMC helped to promote this conversation to prepare future primary care providers and increase these conversations in the community.
