Douglas Wells of Scranton, other Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine students support Friends of the Poor

2017 Aug 30

Douglas Wells of Scranton and other second-year medical students at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (Geisinger Commonwealth) are this year's organizers of the school's annual Turkey Trot benefitting Friends of the Poor. Friends of the Poor is a Scranton-based nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for the area's low-income community. The student Turkey Trot committee raises funds for Friends of the Poor in a variety of ways leading up to the main event, a 5k/10k run held each November. On Aug. 27, the students held their first fundraiser by selling tickets to a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders baseball game. Fifty percent of the value of each ticket sold went to the Turkey Trot fund that supports Friends of the Poor.

The eighth annual Turkey Trot 5k/10k run will be held this year on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 9 a.m.
