Daniel Bach of Sinking Spring coauthors paper published by Neuroscience Letters

2016 Sep 20

Daniel Bach of Sinking Spring, a first-year medical student at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC ) in Scranton, is co-author of a paper published by Neuroscience Letters in its September 2016 edition. He collaborated with fellow researchers at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Neuroscience Letters is a biweekly scientific journal for short articles covering all aspects of neuroscience.

The article, "Cotinine antagonizes the behavioral effects of nicotine exposure in the planarian Girardia tigrina," examines the behavioral effects of nicotine and one of its major metabolites, cotinine, in aquatic flatworms, a model organism being used in neurobiological, neuropharmacological and regeneration research. Findings indicate "cotinine antagonizes? [decreased] nicotine induced motility and also decreases the expression of nicotine-induced pSLMs (planarian seizure-like movements)?[and] prevents the manifestation of some of the withdrawal-like behaviors induced by nicotine."

"While my main clinical interests include primary care and working with underserved communities," said Bach, "my research experiences gave me an appreciation for the basic sciences and the opportunity to apply critical thinking skills to a scientific investigation from the very beginning of idea creation and implementation to the final end of data analysis and writing a scientific paper. I learned the importance of how research does not always go as expected, but can often lead to different avenues for future investigation. I look forward to still being involved in research over the next four years at TCMC and beyond in my career."
