Adriana Feliz of Canton helps lead student blood drive effort at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's Doylestown campus

2017 Nov 29

Master of biomedical sciences (MBS) student, Adriana Feliz of Canton, helped organize and lead the Baruch S. Blumberg Institute at the Pennsylvania Biotech Park's biannual Red Cross Blood Drive. The biopark is home to Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine's Doylestown campus.

More than 25 individuals donated blood, with four power red donations.

According to the Red Cross, Power Red is similar to a whole-blood donation, which contains red blood cells, platelets, plasma and white blood cells. However, since red blood cells are the most frequently used blood component and are needed by almost every type of patient requiring transfusion, in a Power Red donation, a special machine is used to allow donors to safely give two units of red blood cells at one sitting by returning plasma and platelets to the donor.

Community service co-chairs Adriana Feliz of Canton, Massachusetts and Josephine Sinamano of Carrollton, Texas, both members of Geisinger Commonwealth's master of biomedical sciences (MBS) Class of 2018, coordinated the event with the American Red Cross.
